In addition, RITSEC has held regional conferences and workshops to promote environmental themes and raise regional awareness.
In 1996, RITSEC organized an "Environment Infobahn" specialized Internet training course for environmentalists. The course was prepared
and conducted in coordination with the Regional Information Technology Institute (RITI) and covered major environmental issues.
The course was held six times throughout the year.
Also in 1996, RITSEC held a regional workshop entitled "Planning in an Uncertain and Complex Environment:
Phase V of the NLTPS Process - Building Africa's Information Highway." The workshop was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia,
from 30 April - 8 May, 1996. The goal of the regional workshop was to develop an action framework to build Africa's information
and communication infrastructure.
RITSEC and EITS have been pioneers in the region in the use of information technology in environmental protection and
sustainable development. As environmental issues become increasingly important to local, national and regional development,
the need for effective and efficient tools to process, analyze, and retrieve the growing amount of information regarding the
Earth and its natural resources. RITSEC is working hard to develop those tools and make them available to the region.
