Internet Initiative

Realizing the importance of the Internet in linking the Arab countries within the region and linking the region to the world, RITSEC in 1992 was pioneer in introducing the Internet to Egypt and all Arab countries. RITSEC was the first Internet Service Provider to all government agencies, private sector companies and universities in the region. Following Egypt, Jordan and Syria were the primary Arab countries utilizing RITSEC internet services and capacities in building their national internet infrastructure. Through the provision of RITSEC communication and networking technical support services and projects other countries built their national capacities and had access to the world wide information resources.

The Internet initial gateway was built using an analog line to France and a few email servers. Over time, it evolved into an extensive digital infrastructure with high capacities. Internet users in Syria, Jordan and other countries used to dial up to the local X.25 network which automatically connects them to Egypt's X.25 to immediate access to the Internet.

RITSEC communication and networking managers and professionals were very successful in building the Internet infrastructure and managing its services delivered in Egypt and other countries of the region. They have initiated a number of regional projects that helped in the growth of the internet services for specialized communities. Among these regional projects are RAITNET “Regional Arab Information and Telecommunication Network”, the "Environment Highway," the "Education Highway," the "Tourism and Culture Highway", RDLN “Regional Distance Learning Network.
