The Information Highway Unit
RITSEC's Information Highway Unit was created in 1995 to upgrade the regional information infrastructure. The Unit is a group of programs and projects designed to provide regional interconnectivity, create basic regional network services, and to act as an incubator for networks in various fields, with the objective of providing value-added services to an increasing number of users. The Information Highway Unit created the following networks:
  • Arabic/Latin Email System
    This system provides electronic mail, file transfer, and bulletin board facilities on both Novell and GE carrier networks. RITSEC tailored and refined this popular system for its clients in the Arab region
  • Trade Information Systems
    This program develops a generic trade information system based on RITSEC's TradeNet system. RITSEC tailors the generic program to meet the client's needs.
  • TradeNet
    TradeNet is a trade information system that is designed to promote investment and trade by the provision of consistent, accurate, reliable, and effective trade information to government organizations, corporations, and individuals. TradeNet provides a mechanism for capturing, analyzing, packaging, networking, and disseminating information on trade, investment nd technology between the business community and the world.
  • Presidential Web Site
    RITSEC created a web site for the Egyptian presidency in 1997. Launched by H.E. President Hosni Mubarak at C@inet '97, this comprehensive site includes a biographic profiles of the president and the first lady, news about the president, and a profile of Egypt with information on Egypt's history, geography, political system, key economic indicators, and investing in Egypt. The site also features an interactive tour of Abdeen Palace, the residence of Egypt's president
  • RITSEC Business Online
    RITSEC Business Online is an online trading network, providing a channel for corporations and individuals to access information on investment opportunities.

  • TourismNet
    RITSEC's TourismNet is a web site that features eight online databases of tourist attractions and services in Egypt. The site has received international recognition in the form of the "Top 5% Award." RITSEC has submitted proposals to donor agencies to secure funding to extend the site to cover other Arab countries
  • HealthNet
    HealthNet is a web site that provides links to six online English and Arabic databases of hospitals, physicians, medical companies, and pharmaceuticals in Egypt. RITSEC also provided training courses, workshops, and seminars to assist physicians and other healthcare providers in using the Internet and established an email list server to promote and support interaction among physicians and other healthcare professionals.
  • CultureNet
    RITSEC created a web site for the Arab Region chapter of the International Council of Museums. The site contains information about the chapter and its mission as well as information on the region.
  • LearnNet
    With the objective of establishing a regional network for distance learning in information technology, RITSEC initiated the LearnNet project in 1998. LearnNet provides participating organizations in the Arab World with capacity building facilities and the technical assistance they require to operate distance learning projects and programs. Utilizing videoconferencing facilities and advanced communication and networking technologies, LearnNet provides professional online training.
  • RAITNET
    RITSEC developed a web site for disseminating information about the Regional Arab Information Technology Network (RAITNET) and for supporting its projects, programs, and member organizations. The web site provides background information on RAITNET and an online database of its members. The site hosts seven electronic discussion groups in areas relating to information technology applications, such as IT in culture, tourism, health, environment, business and education. The site also includes meta-databases that index more than 500 links to web sites providing information on Arab countries.
